Drive to New Heights by Going the Extra Mile

Wednesday, 18 February, 2015

We’re all now well into 2015 and those New Years’ Resolutions of doing more for others rather than caring for ourselves may have fell by the wayside. But it doesn’t have to be that way! It’s good to go that extra mile to help others. That feeling you get knowing you went out of your way to make someone else’s day better is one-of-a-kind. There’s nothing that can match that warming of your heart.

We have a way to not only help out your local businesses, but also benefit you at the same time. California is bountiful with some of the best farmers’ markets in the country! We’ve taken the time to compose a can’t-miss list of some of the go-to spots right in your own backyard.

So get out and surpass the normal expectations. You’ll find going the extra mile will take you to somewhere you’ve never been before. At the same time, you’ll experience some of the freshest produce and goods you can find.

  • Scale the Mountain – Mountain View Farmers’ MarketLocated right in Mountain View is one of the top five America’s Favorite Farmers’ Markets. For over two decades now, the Mountain View Market has been supplying people with the freshest crops around. Make it a Sunday Funday, and stop in as they’re open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • See the Stars – Hollywood Farmers’ MarketOkay, maybe you won’t cross paths with Matthew McConaughey or Cate Blanchett. You will find a bevy of fresh produce and artisanal goods, including biscuits, honey, jams, fish, and free-range poultry, that you’ll want to nominate for their own awards. Make a day of it in Hollywood with their cooking demos, live music, and workshops for the kids!
  • Ferry Fresh – Ferry Plaza Farmers’ MarketHead over to San Francisco for the Ferry Plaza Farmers’ Market, which offers patrons fresh produce from the regional farmers to meat and eggs from local ranchers. Stop by on a Saturday and taste the latest from local restaurants as they display their best dishes.
  •  Lettuce Turnip The Beet – The Vegetable Shop at the Chino Family FarmThe Vegetable Shop has been a staple in Rancho Santa Fe, dating all the way back to 1969. Stop by here and rub elbows with celebrity chefs and foodies from all over. It’s one of the most unique farmers’ markets around, as it’s stocked with cool finds like yellow watermelon and red carrots!
  • Pier Pressure – Santa Monica Farmers’ MarketTake a break from the Santa Monica Pier and head over to the Santa Monica Farmers’ Market for a fun-filled day. Experience outdoor concerts, green living workshops, and fresh small-farm agriculture products. You do not only get crisp produce, but a learning experience at the same time.
  • Sight Seeing – Yamashiro Farmers’ MarketThe Yamashiro Farmers’ Market would even impress Garfield. Granted, the lasagna cupcakes (yes, lasagna cupcakes) would be responsible for that, but the breathtaking views and nighttime setting is sight to take in. You can only enjoy this farmers market from April to September, so be sure to capitalize!
  • Harvest Moon – Montrose Harvest MarketHere’s a traditional farmers’ market with a twist that is sure to pique the interest of all the antique aficionados out there. Every Sunday, the Montrose Harvest Market offers a variety of prepared foods, special events, antiques and collectibles, to match its fresh produces.

  • Fresh from Fresno – Vineyard Farmers’ Market
Housed under the majestic vineyard arbor at Blackstone and Shaw, this market offers Californians organic fruits and vegetables grown within a two-hour drive of Fresno. Stock up on fresh goods and then celebrate your finds with a glass of wine.
  • Beast of the East – Grand Lake Farmers’ Market

Check out the 2010 Best of the East Bay winner, as it’s home to 40-plus local farmers, 30-plus specialty food vendors, and a select few local artisans. After stocking up on its delicious goods, pack for a picnic at Splash Pad Park which is adjacent to the market.

  • King of The North (Bay) – San Rafael Civic Center Farmers’ Market

Your summers are stocked of fun and activities, but it’s time to add one more to the itinerary. Almost 200 local farmers contribute to the San Rafael market. Since its inception in 1987, the market still manages to stay true to its local feel and serves the freshest foods the North Bay area has to offer.
